What is the SCWSA?
The SCWSA is comprised of women and men sailors (18 years of age and up) who race a Naples Sabot. The women race in three fleets of Naples Sabots. Novice sailors race in the C Fleet. More experienced women sailors race in B or A Fleets. Men are included in most race days, and are given a separate start and race among themselves. The organization provides an opportunity to race at a sailor's own level. Annual dues are $10.
What can you expect?
The races usually begin about noon. Every effort is made to provide three races. The host club arranges a brunch or lunch for participants and guests. Entry fees range from $10 to $25. Because of the eight-foot size of the Naples Sabots, the sailing takes place within the harbors here in Southern California. The host club provides the race committee and support boats. At the end of the races after stowing boats and equipment, the sailors enjoy the hospitalities provided by the host group. Trophies are presented at each regatta. Perpetual trophies are awarded each November at San Diego Yacht Club to the top women A, B and C skippers as well as the top men skippers.
Who sails?
Members of the Southern California Women's Sailing Association include both men and women and come from various yacht clubs in Southern California. There are several individuals not affiliated with a yacht club who are members at large. Average attendance is about 40 sailors in five classes at each regatta.
